Veins

Sanctum offers specialist treatment of abnormal veins such as varicose veins and spider veins.

Spider veins are those small clusters of red, blue or purple capillary veins, and do not serve a biological purpose. Backflow from larger veins into smaller capillaries cause spider veins, which is why treatment of spider veins in the presence of an underlying varicose vein is not considered appropriate.

Varicose veins are the largest of abnormal veins and may bulge from the skin’s surface. They impose an extra burden on deep veins and if left untreated, can lead to complications such as inflammation, clots, ulcers and other problems. Early treatment of varicose veins can improve blood circulation and minimise the risk of varicose vein-related complications and further progression of the disease.

Dr Asha Ram is a Foundation Fellow if the Australasian College of Phlebology with over 20  years’ experience treating men and women of all ages with spider veins and varicose veins of the legs.

At Sanctum, we use a variety of treatment options depending on individual needs:

  • Microsclerotherapy
  • Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)
  • Vascular Lasers and Intense Pulse Light

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution into each affected vein, causing the vein to collapse and fade. Sclerotherapy remains the gold standard for treatment of superficial leg veins.

In most cases, excellent clearance of the existing veins can be achieved. As leg veins can often be related to a strong family history of the condition, ongoing maintenance treatment over the years may be necessary in some cases to maintain results.
